Hi Izzie
Thanks for your email. Sorry not to get back to you re your previous email.
Regarding what Nick will do – He is very flexible. He will show some clips and some featurettes as per www.damaris.org/theory<http://www.damaris.org/theory>, will talk around it and will encourage discussion and reflection. He will have been praying about it for many days before (indeed he is praying now for the event) but he will only prepare what he will say on the train coming up (and will adapt it as he responds to the people in the room).
It's Nick's policy that he doesn't ever sign any basis of faith - he has been doing university missions for 30 years. He speaks a lot. You can find out more about his positions on things by reading his books. See below for the Damaris basis of faith.
We believe in...
1. The one true God who lives eternally in three persons—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
2. The love, grace and sovereignty of God in creating, sustaining, ruling, redeeming and judging the world.
3. The divine inspiration and supreme authority of the Old and New Testament Scriptures, which are the written Word of God—fully trustworthy for faith and conduct.
4. The dignity of all people, made male and female in God's image to love, be holy and care for creation, yet corrupted by sin, which incurs divine wrath and judgement.
5. The incarnation of God’s eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ—born of the virgin Mary; truly divine and truly human, yet without sin.
6. The atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross: dying in our place, paying the price of sin and defeating evil, so reconciling us with God.
7. The bodily resurrection of Christ, the first fruits of our resurrection; his ascension to the Father, and his reign and mediation as the only Saviour of the world.
8. The justification of sinners solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ.
9. The ministry of God the Holy Spirit, who leads us to repentance, unites us with Christ through new birth, empowers our discipleship and enables our witness.
10. The Church, the body of Christ both local and universal, the priesthood of all believers—given life by the Spirit and endowed with the Spirit's gifts to worship God and proclaim the gospel, promoting justice and love.
11. The personal and visible return of Jesus Christ to fulfil the purposes of God, who will raise all people to judgement, bring eternal life to the redeemed and eternal condemnation to the lost, and establish a new heaven and new earth.
Hope this is okay.
Ellen

Hi Ellen,
So having met with the rest of the committee, we think The Theory of Everything would be the best fit for our event. Since Imperial is a specialist science university it would resonate the best with our audience!
We just had some questions about how exactly Nick's presentation will run. Are you able to give us a run down of the content/format that he usually uses? Also, since our Events Week and our whole mission as a Christian Union is based upon sharing the Gospel faithfully and truthfully with students and staff at Imperial, we need to ask all of our visiting speakers to sign the doctrinal basis of faith, as set out by the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF), a copy of which can be found here: http://www.uccf.org.uk/about/doctrinal-basis.htm . We'll take an email confirmation of acceptance as an electronic signature that you have accepted the doctrinal basis.
Thanks and we hope to hear from you soon.
Izzie

Hi Izzie
Nick will build a presentation around the resources we did for Theory of Everything and Unbroken. Can you make sure you can download all of the featurettes for these and check they play (you can find them here www.damaris.org/theory<http://www.damaris.org/theory> and www.damaris.org/unbroken<http://www.damaris.org/unbroken>). Nick will decide closer to the date which ones he'll use and how he'll string them together as a talk with Q&A afterwards.
I look forward to getting more info from you soon.
Many thanks
Ellen

Hi Ellen!
Sorry for the delay but I'm meeting with the rest of the committee on Friday so I will hopefully be able to give more details then. The time will be 6.30pm and I think we're looking for the event to run for about an hour plus time for questions. We basically want an event where we can talk about popular media and how it can relate to Christianity/raise bigger questions. I saw on your website that Damaris have material for The Theory of Everything, I think that could be really interesting to have a talk on, especially at Imperial! Other films from your website that would work very well at Imperial are the Hunger Games (Mockingjay), Interstellar, The Imitation Game and The Hobbit. We're envisaging a talk with clips thrown in and time for the audience to ask the speaker questions afterwards. The way we typically do the Q and A is have a 10-15 minute break after the talk for tea and coffee and then having a roving mic as well as a number that people can text their questions to anonymously.
Let me know what you think about this and if you think anything needs further clarification or changing.
Thanks so much for your help,
Izzie

Hi Ellen,
Hope this email gets to you! We're hoping to hold the event on the evening of 10th February 2015. If this date doesn't work do you know of anyone else who might be free to do the same sort of thing?
Thanks,

Hi Izzie
Thanks for your email. Sorry for the late reply. I found your email in my junk mail folder!
Nick would be best for this and can speak around the latest films (and can show clips/features) but his diary is very full. Could you give me an idea of dates and then I will check the calendar.
Many thanks
Ellen

Hi Ellen,
This Izzie (the one who posted in the Portswood Church facebook group!), thanks so much for messaging me! I'm the secretary of the Christian Union at Imperial College London and we're currently planning our main events week for 2015. We've been thinking a lot as a CU recently about what our friends are in to and how we can link up sharing the Gospel with their interests. We think it could be awesome if we could pick a popular film that could spark conversation about the Gospel as it's taking something that everyone is interested in but giving them another way to think about it. We're basically looking for someone who is knowledgable about popular cinema who might be able to give a Gospel talk based on a reasonably new popular film (we don't know which film yet, still throwing ideas around!).
Are Damaris able to help us out with finding a speaker/helping us to structure the event?
Thanks so much and God bless,
Izzie Sims
ICCU Secretary
