Can't remember if I've already sent this out but this is the last communication I had with Sye Pethick in re: missions week. Would be good if everyone can think about it over the summer so we can get the ball rolling!

Izzie,
Good work! You guys are efficient! And they say students are disorganised…
I’m very happy for you guys to tell me what you’d like me to do for the carol service. You know your context better than I do, so feel free to offer as much direction as you like. I won’t feel patronised. If you’re after pointers though, off the top of my head I’d say do something like Matthew 1:18-2:12:
- Covers the essentials of Christ’s identity (Saviour, 1:21; Divine, 1:23).
- Chapter 2’s Magi from ‘The East shows Christianity to be a global faith, rather than just Israeli/British, which might be helpful for internationals relatively new to the country, interested in Christianity for cultural reasons, but not realising it addresses them directly.
- Herod demonstrates unbelief despite the evidence, which might help our international friends understand why Britain is so unChristian in reality, despite such heavy and prolonged exposure to the gospel.
Anyway, those are very hasty thoughts. Over to you!
Re Jonah: feel free to change course if you think it best, but Jonah suits me very well - I’m preaching it at my church over the summer! It gets to the heart of mission, and the grace of God. I love it!
Sye

Hi there!
Just to let you know we've made a bit of headway on deciding topics for talks and dates for the events. Our carol service is going to be held on Friday 12th December at Holy Trinity Church on Prince Consort Road (just across the road from Imperial's South Kensington campus and right next door to our Union building!). In terms of readings etc, we wanted to ask you if you already have a carol service talk (or something similar) prepapred, or have any ideas? We'd be quite happy to let you take the lead on that, but if not I can talk to the rest of the committee again and get back to you. The main thing we'd need you to keep in mind is that we're expecting a fair few non-Christians to just show up straight from campus, so the talk should be geared towards sharing the story of Christmas with those who may have never heard it before, or never heard it as adults.
We're still looking at dates for our weekend away but we're hoping to hold it from 7th-9th November at Downe Scout Activity Centre in Kent. In terms of the talks, we'd quite like to look at a section of a book and since our ultimate goal as a CU is to spread the gospel on campus, we want our weekend away to be an opportunity to explore what evangelism means to us and how we can go about evagelising to our friends and the wider Imperial community. We've thought about looking at Jonah but I would have to get back to you a bit later about exactly what we'd like to do. If you have any thoughts about Jonah that you could share with us, that would be great.
Sorry this has been quite a long email, but I hope that gives you a better idea of where we're at and what we want to achieve with our events. Would be great to hear your thoughts on what we've suggested.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Izzie Sims
ICCU Secretary
