Hi Everyone,

Firstly can I say major thanks and well done to you all, you've been superb all through the term! I hope you are all enjoying a little respite at home even with looming exams etc.

I would really appreciate all your thoughts on this idea of a summer mission trip. I really need to know if you think it is a good idea, if you think it is too much to take on, or would be a distraction or an opportunity you think we should grasp?

If we do want to do this then we'll need to get the ball rolling in the new year so your thoughts now would be really helpful!

Thanks,

Guy

>Hi Everyone,
>
>Caitlin, James and I have been discussing the possibility of running a summer mission trip. The idea is very much in the works at the moment, but I feel like I should have talked to you all about it much earlier this term.
>
>The basic idea would to be to take a group from the CU out to do mission in Brazil with David Kurka, working with University Christian Unions out there. Probably a group of around 20 people for two or three weeks (both of those are flexible at this stage)
>
>Both David Kurka and Chris Oldfield love the idea.

>Here is David's thoughts:

>Hi Guy (and guys.. :) )!!
>Thank you for your email! I was very glad to receive it and hear from you!
>This is great! I really liked the idea of a british team coming to Brazil! :)
>I think this is a idea that can work and I am available and very interested to help in this!
>I can talk directly to ABU (IFES in Brazil) staff about this, but
from now, I can see some ways both you and us could benefit with a
project like this...
>We could think in some activities to be done with Brazilian students,
like a mission week, or something alike... also, I think that the
Brazilian Christian Unions would be interested in hearing about your
experiences in UK and you theirs...
>Another possibility is that you get involved with a social
activity... the ABU itself has association with some works and it is
easy to find other suitable activities with this purpose. Maybe a work
like this can fit better the Imperial's terms to give you the funding...
>
>
>Well, I would be more than happy to talk more about this and give you more information you may need... Let's keep in touch! :)
>
>
>I miss you all very much! Please pray for the work in Brazil, as
many exciting things are happening! hopefully, I will send you news
soon!

>And Chris' initial thoughts:

>
>Great idea, love the initiative.
>Ive cc'd Sarah Dunkley who heads up uccf summer teams to ask
>(1) if this went ahead whether the orientation would be open to them still?
>(2) Whether the summer teams handbook could be available to look through,
re what they'd need to consider eg insurance, injections...
>Chris
>
>Since talking to them this has (surprisingly to me) been discussed in some of the upper echelons of UCCF and ABU (IFES in Brazil) and the response is currently positive.
>
>There are a couple of reasons I think the CU in particular should think about running this to Brazil:
>
>	* We have strong links with David Kurka, who is now working with CU's in Brazil (mainly with the university in Campinas near Sao Paulo)
>	* The union offers grants up to 40% of the transport, food and accommodation costs for tours such as this, so more of the CU are likely to be able to afford it if we run it than if anyone else runs something similar.
>
>	* (Surprisingly?) An overseas mission trip is just the kind of thing which fulfills the criteria for tour funding - furthering the aims and objectives of the society in a way not possible at Imperial
>	* This could be an excellent way to really unite the CU as a mission team heading into the next academic year!
>
>Feel free to peruse at your leisure: https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/sites/default/files/files/Trips%20%26%20Tours%20Handbook%20v2.0.pdf
>So I guess I am asking, what are your thoughts on the idea? Do you think it would work? Do you think we should go ahead with it? What do you anticipate being good/bad, hard/easy? Do you think this is the right way for us as a CU to be using our resources to honour the lord?
>
>Lets all be prayerfully considering this opportunity!

>p.s. Lets keep this on the email rather than flooding this week's committee meeting with it.
